Professor Geoff Chase – Deputy Director

Director, Mechatronics Programme

Professor Geoff Chase received his B.S. from Case Western Reserve University and his M.S. and PhD at Stanford University. He has over 11 years of industry experience and has been at the University of Canterbury since 2000.

His fundamental research is at the intersection of engineering, clinical medicine and physiology, or model-based therapeutics and devices. The goal is to create the means to deliver efficient, optimized, and patient-specific healthcare. Clinically, his primary areas are intensive and acute care medicine, as well as applications in diabetes, breast cancer diagnostics and innovative medical imaging.

Selected accomplishments include:

  • The development of two start-up companies.
  • His research students have won three New Zealand Young Scientist of the Year awards and two IPENZ Design Awards.
  • The world-leading glycemic control systems developed to save lives and cost in ICUs worldwide and which won the 2006 NZ Health Innovation Supreme Award.

Dr Chase has published over 900 international journal and conference papers, and is an inventor on 12 US and European patents. He is on the editorial board of four journals in Bioengineering and Clinical Medicine, and deputy chair of International Federation of Automatic Contaol Technical Committee on Modelling and Control in Biological and Medical Systems. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand (FRSNZ) and a Fellow of IPENZ (FIPENZ).
