Professor Kate McGrathVictoria University of Wellington
Kate McGrath became Vice-Provost (Research) at VUW in January 2015. She is also Chair of VicLink Ltd, VUW’s commercialisation company and is on the Boards of WETOX, and Auramer Bio (spinouts from VUW research), the National Energy Research Institute (NERI) and Callaghan Innovation, a New Zealand Crown Entity.
Kate was the Director of the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, a New Zealand Government-funded Centre of Research Excellence, 2011 through 2015. She joined Victoria in 2004 in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences. She has held postdoctoral positions at L’Université de Pierre et Marie Curie, France and at Princeton University, United States of America. Her first academic position was at the University of Otago, Dunedin. In 2013, Kate completed the Advanced Management Programme at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, United Kingdom.
Kate was awarded the Easterfield Medal by the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom in 2003; in 2007, she was awarded the Research Medal by the New Zealand Association of Scientists; and in 2013 she received the Wellington Gold Inspire Wellington Award.
Kate’s area of research specialisation is molecular assembly including the development of bone graft materials, using a combination of hydrogel and 3D printing technologies. In such organic/inorganic hybrid materials structures from the nanometre to micrometre length scale, which define the behaviour of the material, are afforded via 3D printing.
