Development of invasive aspergillosis mouse model for spectral CT imaging

Project outline:
Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a leading cause of invasive fungal infection-related mortality and morbidity in patients with haematological malignancies and bone marrow transplants. The early and reliable differential diagnosis of IA is a major challenge. A new form of imaging, MARS molecular CT, offers an opportunity to detect IA non-invasively, and this insight would enable the clinician to change the treatment accordingly. We aim to combine genetic manipulations and advanced biochemistry to develop a suitable mouse model to use the nanoparticle-based immuno MARS imaging for the diagnosis of IA, which is so far not used for diagnosis. The study will be carried out as a collaboration between the Inflammation Research Group, an active research program on inflammatory disease with clinical links to Christchurch hospital, and the Centre for Bioengineering, a major theme is the development of 3D spectral x-ray imaging.

Preferred student expertise:
We are looking for a bright, enthusiastic and meticulous student with A/A+ average grade to undertake their studies in this multidisciplinary field. The ideal candidate would have a strong background in molecular pharmacology and molecular pathology, with an interest in x-ray CT imaging and gene therapy.
