TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS

Platform 1: Imaging & Scanning

Medical imaging is a critical part of the medical technology industry. Worldwide it is a USD 30B per year industry, growing at around 7% per year. New Zealand is a world leader in MARS spectral imaging and cardiac MRI. As a Technology Platform for the MedTech CoRE, emphasis will be placed on molecular imaging. Both MRI and MARS provide this information to researchers by measuring biomarkers. These biomarkers can be either intrinsic such as fat/water concentration and blood flows, or extrinsic using injected pharmaceuticals. These allow measurement and monitoring of disease and its treatment over time.

Platform 2: Sensing & Remote Monitoring

Miniaturised sensors will transform medical monitoring and intervention. Wireless sensors are leading to continuous and unobtrusive monitoring. This Technology Platform will accelerate the development, adoption and deployment of new sensors. Our infrastructural capability meets two needs: “niche discovery” and “getting to scale”. Niche discovery relates to the creation of unique instruments relying heavily on human expertise and specialise infrastructure. Getting to scale focuses on communication, interconnectivity, and supporting widespread adoption of sensor technologies by our diverse partners.

Platform 3: Actuation & Control

Many problems in medicine and health need innovative actuators, together with their associated control systems. These are required to 1) provide mechanical stimuli to biological tissues in order to discover and influence their mechanical properties; 2) enhance motor or sensory functions within and without the body; or 3) provide highly efficient or novel means of imparting force or motion in medical devices and instruments. Specific control architectures, approaches and algorithms are required for each actuator type.

Platform 4: Design & Manufacturing

This Platform will generate innovative user-focused applications of technologies developed within the CoRE. This will lead to high value, advanced medical devices, systems and services in collaboration with medical experts, science, engineering, design and industry partners. A specific strength in this Platform is the Smart Interaction Design (SID) programme, which refers to human-device interactions in which medical devices can react in “smart” ways to the environment and the actions of patients, medical practitioners and healthcare providers. Smart interactions are supported by the unique combination of design, biosensing, and biomimetics within the Platform.

Platform 5: Software & Modelling

Bioengineering software addresses five main areas: Simulation systems; Visualisation systems; Model representation technology (languages, tools), including the link to Electronic Health Records; Model repositories (models, data annotations); and Graphical and other user interfaces. These underpin all projects in the MedTech CoRE.
